Have you ever heard of “JLPT”?

Do you know there is a Japanese language ability test for foreigners? The name of this test is Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験Nihongo Nōryoku Shiken). We call it “JLPT“. This test is the most popular test for foreigners who learn Japanese. So if you would like to work in Japan or go to university in Japan in the future, we strongly recommend you take this test 🙂 I will introduce JLPT with this blog for you!

What is JLPT?

The JLPT is a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers, covering language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability. The test is held twice a year in Japan and selected countries (on the first Sunday of July and December), and once a year in other regions (on the first Sunday of December). You are able to take a test in Sydney as well 🙂 The test this year will be held on 6th July and on 7th December 2025 in Sydney!! *In July, the available levels are limited.

How are the levels divided?

The JLPT has five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. The easiest level is N5 and the most difficult level is N1.
