Four Places Near BBIC Where You Can Experience Japan | Discover Japanese Life in Sydney

By BBICollege, Posted on 14/04/2026

If you are interested in Japan and currently studying Japanese, why not try using your Japanese in real life🥢?

Learning a language becomes much more meaningful when you actually use it outside the classroom. Fortunately, around BBIC in Sydney, there are many places where you can experience Japanese culture, food, and daily life.

This time, I would like to introduce four of my favorite spots that I personally visit regularly as a Japanese person living in Sydney.

Even while being in Sydney, there are actually many places where you can experience authentic Japan. In this article, I have picked out some of my favorite go-to spots that I highly recommend.

🛒 1. Genki Mart – Japanese Grocery Store

Genki Mart is a Japanese grocery store where you can find ingredients that are not usually available in other Asian supermarkets.

From sauces and seasonings to snacks and sweets, the variety of Japanese products is impressive.

One of the most popular items here is natto (fermented soybeans), which is sold at a very affordable price.

If you love natto or want to try it for the first time, this is a great place to start!

(By the way, even some Japanese people are not big fans of natto. I am actually one of them☺)

🍜 2.Oiden Bowl Bar

Oiden Bowl Bar is a restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Japanese donburi-style meals, including udon and ramen, at a very affordable price.

Personally, I especially love their udon.

The restaurant follows a self-service style similar to many traditional udon shops in Japan, where you can choose from a variety of tempura dishes placed on the counter and add them to your meal. This creates a truly authentic Japanese atmosphere.

My personal favorite is the mentaiko udon (spicy cod roe udon).

I often enjoy it together with tempura such as shrimp, sweet potato, and fish cake.

There is usually a line, but the turnover is quite fast. So don’t be discouraged if you see a queue—it’s absolutely worth trying!

🍱 3.Conveni8 Japanese Asian Grocery– Japanese-Style Convenience Store

https://maps.app.goo.gl/1QRZ4ggjDs3WpSXr9

Conveni 8 is a small but very special Japanese-style convenience store in the office district.

As the name suggests, it feels very similar to a Japanese “konbini.”

What I personally love about this store:

  • Hot snacks like steamed buns(Niku-man) (just like in Japan)
  • A wide range of frozen meals (e.g. Kakiage,Yakisoba(There is a specific brand of yakisoba that I really like, I have only seen here!))
  • Seasonal Japanese sweets such as sakura mochi(It may not always be available as it depends on the season.)

🌸 What is Sakura Mochi?

Sakura mochi is a traditional Japanese sweet made with pink-colored rice cake wrapped around red bean paste and covered with a salted cherry leaf.

It is especially popular in spring and is known for its unique combination of sweet and slightly salty flavors, representing the season of cherry blossoms in Japan.

🍤 What is Kakiage?

Kakiage is a type of Japanese tempura made by mixing small pieces of vegetables and sometimes seafood, then deep-frying them into a crispy fritter.

It is often served on top of udon or soba noodles and adds a delicious crunchy texture to the dish.

🍱 4.Momiji Japanese Takeaway– Japanese Takeaway Restaurant

Momiji Japanese Takeaway is a Japanese takeaway restaurant located in the basement food court under Conveni 8.

The staff always serve customers in Japanese, which makes the experience feel very authentic and welcoming.

The atmosphere is very friendly, and it often feels like you have returned to Japan.

On Fridays, the staff even say “Good job this week!” which always makes my day.

The daily specials also change regularly, so you can visit often without getting bored.

My favorite dish is agedashi tofu.

🍲 What is Agedashi Tofu?

Agedashi tofu is a classic Japanese dish made by lightly frying tofu and serving it in a warm, flavorful dashi-based broth.

The outside is slightly crispy while the inside remains soft and silky, making it a comforting and popular home-style Japanese dish.

Have you visited any of these places before?

Most of the places mentioned above are run or staffed by Japanese speakers, which gives you a perfect opportunity to practice the Japanese you learn at BBIC in real life.

(In Sydney, it is also common to find Japanese restaurants and shops where staff are not Japanese, so speaking Japanese when you can is a great advantage!)

I hope you enjoy exploring these spots and experience a little piece of Japan here in Sydney 🇯🇵✨
