Connect Through Japanese! “Japanese Chat Night” Event Report

On March 12, 2025, BBI College, a Japanese language school in Sydney, Australia, hosted the event “Japanese Chat Night” for Australians who want to practice speaking Japanese. Designed as a space for Japanese learners in Australia and Japanese residents in Sydney to interact using Japanese, the event attracted over 40 participants. The venue was filled with excitement, creating a lively atmosphere from start to finish.

Event Overview

  • Date & Time: Wednesday, March 12, 2025, 6:00pm – 7:00pm
  • Location: BBI College (Suite 3.03, 39 Liverpool Street, Sydney, NSW 2000)
  • Organizer: BBI College (BBI College Japanese Language School)

Event Details

“Japanese Chat  Night” was born out of the desire to connect with fellow Japanese learners! The event aimed to provide a casual setting for Australians interested in Japanese language and culture to engage in conversations in Japanese.

The event was hosted by BBI College, which also offers Japanese teacher training programs. With the support of Japanese volunteers living in Sydney, BBIC successfully created a space where Japanese learners could enjoy real-life conversations.

A pre-event survey revealed strong interest in topics such as Japanese food culture, travel, anime & manga, modern society, and traditional culture, demonstrating the participants’ enthusiasm for Japan.

Event Highlights

Participants were divided into groups of about six, with two Japanese speakers joining each group for free conversation. Topics ranged from “Have you been to Japan?” “What do you like about Japan?” “What’s your favorite anime?” to various other personal interests, allowing attendees to practice Japanese in a fun and relaxed way.

Japanese language school teachers and students also participated, making it possible for attendees to ask questions like “What kind of classes do you take?” “How is your experience learning Japanese?” This provided a valuable opportunity to hear firsthand experiences of language learning.

Through this event, Japanese learners and Japanese residents connected, deepening their understanding of both language and culture in an enjoyable and interactive environment.

Participant Feedback

Event surveys collected the following participant comments:

Question: What did you enjoy at the event?

  • Talking and learning with native Japanese speakers
  • No pressure and opportunity to ask questions about the course and meet the teachers and classmates
  • Using Japanese and meeting new people
  • Meeting other learners and getting to practice
  • Having the chance to chat with fluent speakers even though I still don’t fully know the language

Event Impact and Future Plans

With approximately 40-50 attendees, the event successfully brought together Japan-loving Australians and Japanese speakers eager to connect through language exchange. For BBIC, this was the first time hosting an event on this scale, and the positive response was overwhelming.

Promotion for the event was done through Facebook and Instagram, yet within just three days, applications exceeded the 40-person limit. This highlights the significant demand for opportunities to learn Japanese and casually interact with Japanese speakers in Australia. Since similar events remain relatively scarce, BBIC sees great value in continuing to host them in the future.

Additionally, some of the Japanese volunteers expressed interest in gaining experience teaching Japanese in English or becoming Japanese teachers, making this event a valuable opportunity for their professional development as well.

Next Up: “English Chat Night “!?

In addition to operating a Japanese language school, BBIC also supports Japanese students and working holidaymakers in Australia. Given the success of this event, we are now considering hosting an “English Chat Night”! *For now, it’s still under consideration…

This new event will provide a space for Japanese learners of English and Australians studying Japanese to communicate in English. Participants will be grouped based on their English proficiency levels, ensuring a comfortable and engaging environment for everyone.

While similar to a meetup or language exchange, having BBIC as the official organizer ensures a safe and structured space for interaction. We look forward to expanding opportunities for cross-language exchange in the future!
