Japanese New Year Traditions

In our previous blog, I briefly touched on New Year’s in Japan, so this time I’ll share a bit more about it. New Year (お正月, Oshogatsu) is one of the most important holidays in Japan. It’s a time for families to gather, honor ancestors, and hope for health and happiness in the coming year. The first few days of January are filled with special foods and traditions that hold deep cultural significance. In this blog, we will focus on two important New Year’s foods: osechi-ryori and nanakusa gayu.

Osechi-Ryori: The Special New Year’s traditional dish

One of the most famous foods during New Year’s is “osechi-ryori“, a set of traditional dishes prepared for the holiday. Each dish has a symbolic meaning, wishing for good fortune and prosperity. For example, “kuromame” (sweet black beans) represents health, and “kazunoko” (herring roe) symbolizes fertility and family growth. Osechi is typically prepared in advance so families can relax and enjoy the holiday without worrying about cooking.

Nanakusa gayu: A Healthy Tradition for January 7th

Another important dish enjoyed during the New Year is “nanakusa-gayu“—a rice porridge made with seven different herbs, traditionally eaten on January 7th. This dish is believed to bring good health for the year ahead. The seven herbs, known as “nanakusa“, are said to have medicinal properties, making the dish a wholesome and refreshing way to start the new year.
