Celebrating the Lunar New Year in Sydney

It’s that time of year again – the season of the Lunar New Year! I guess many people celebrate by spending time with their families. It’s always exciting to see decorations and performances around the city. This year, we’re in the Year of the Snake, so you’ll notice plenty of snake-themed decorations.

Japanese zodiac and New Year

Did you know that Japan also has a similar zodiac culture? In Japan, we have 12 zodiac animal signs; 子(Rat), 丑(Ox), 寅(Tiger), 卯(Rabbit), 辰(Dragon), 巳(Snake), 午(Horse), 未(Ram), 申(Monkey), 酉(Rooster), 戌(Dog), 亥(Boar). Was it the same as the zodiac in your country? I heard that the zodiac animals can differ slightly depending on the country. The year you were born determines your animal sign in the zodiac. Although fewer people send them these days, it’s still traditional to write New Year’s cards, and often, these cards feature the animal of the year.

In addition, in Japan, New Year’s is a time when families gather to celebrate and enjoy traditional foods like osechi-ryori, a variety of special dishes that symbolize prosperity and good fortune.

In case you will be absent from class

At our Japanese language school, we have students from many different cultural backgrounds. We have already received notice from several students that they will be taking a break from lessons during the Lunar New Year, and that’s perfectly fine!

For group lessons, if you miss a class, we’ll send the materials to you via email. You can study at home, and if you have any questions, you can ask the teacher in the next lesson. If you’d prefer, we can also offer online lessons as a special arrangement (though please note that group lessons cannot be taken online every time basically, but feel free to let us know if you have any special requests).

For private lessons, if you are unable to attend and wish to reschedule, please notify us by 5:00 PM the day before the lesson. Otherwise, the full lesson fee will be forfeited, and rescheduling will not be available.

We hope that your learning experience at our school will be even better.
