Student Reviews: Learning Japanese at BBIC-2

By BBICollege, Posted on 16/03/2026

In the second post of our review series, we would like to introduce a comment from a student who first studied Japanese at BBIC, then went to Japan to attend a language school, and has now returned to continue studying with us again.

Many of our students temporarily pause their studies when they travel or work, but we are always delighted when they come back and continue learning Japanese with us!

We are always truly happy when our students come back to continue their studies, and it’s one of the things that motivates us the most✨

Q1. What originally made you choose BBIC, and what is the main reason you continue studying here?

I originally chose BBIC because of the unbeatable location. Conveniently located in Chinatown, just a short walk away from either Town Hall of Central station, it’s perfect for after-work. I continue studying at BBIC because of my teacher, Minako-sensei, who always goes to the extra effort for her students, and makes learning enjoyable. In fact, I enjoyed classes with Minako-sensei so much that after spending a year abroad (in Japan of course!), I returned to BBIC to study specifically with Minako-sensei.

I also appreciate the kind staff at the school who always greet me with a smile and a friendly こんにちは before class. The vibe within the school is transportative and always makes me feel like I’m back in school in Tokyo.

Q2. What do you like most about the teachers or the course you are taking?

I am currently enrolled in the JLPLUS class with Minako-sensei. As I said, Minako-sensei makes our classes enjoyable, but they are also highly effective, particularly given we only have class two hours a week. My Japanese friends themselves have remarked on how my Japanese has improved, even having left Japan, which is testament to Minako-sensei’s skill and experience as a teacher.

Regarding this particular course, the thing I like the most about it is the pace. It straddles the perfect balance between being challenging and stimulating, without being stressful. We also tackle difficult texts like essays and Japanese news segments, which at first glance seem intimidating and impossible to understand. However, without fail, by the end of class, I always leave with a solid understanding of the text and a feeling of accomplishment.

Q3. Even with a busy schedule, what helps you continue learning Japanese consistently?

I think the secret is the pace and commitment-level. If it were too stressful, or if the commitment level was too high, it would be difficult to manage with a busy full-time job. However, the pace and workload is just enough to remain challenging and stimulating, without ever becoming stressful. I always look forward to attending class and I even enjoy the homework tasks we are set.

Q4. Since you started studying at BBIC, what improvements have you noticed in your Japanese skills or confidence?

I have noticed a huge improvement in my reading and writing, thanks especially to our weekly writing tasks. It is an enormously satisfying feeling when you can open a book and confidently read something that would have once made your head explode! Of course my speaking has also improved, but I have also noticed a marked improvement in my listening, to both conversational and formal Japanese.

Q5. Has your motivation or attitude toward learning Japanese changed since joining BBIC? If so, how?

If anything, I have only become more motivated. The more I learn, the more I realise how much there is to learn. I also think that BBIC has shown me that studying language can be more than just studying; it can be a totally immersive and enjoyable cultural experience.

It’s also amazing to be able to learn with native Japanese speakers who can teach you the kind of things you cannot learn from a textbook alone.

Q6. If you were to recommend BBIC to someone interested in learning Japanese, what would you say?

I often recommend BBIC to friends who express interest in learning Japanese or continuing their studies within Australia. I tell them that the teachers at BBIC are dedicated and hard working, the staff are friendly, and the location is ultra convenient. I also think that BBIC provides incredible value for cost.

Q7. During your study experience in Japan, were there any moments when you thought, “I learned this at school!” and found it helpful?

Living in Japan, there were several moments where my studies at BBIC came in handy. At my Japanese language school, I was able to start at a pre-intermediate level instead of starting from the basics, which meant I was able to reach a fairly advanced level by the end of the year.

I also found my speaking skills were more than adequate to find and rent my own apartment, open my own bank account and manage all my daily interactions in Japanese, which was of course very gratifying!

Q8. If you were to recommend BBIC to someone considering a working holiday or studying in Japan, what would you say?Looking back now, how do you feel about your experience of learning Japanese at BBIC?

I would recommend BBIC to anyone thinking about spending a significant amount of time in Japan, because it simulates a Japanese environment. I would also say that learning Japanese will unlock Japan, even for people who have travelled there many times, and there is no better place to learn Japanese in Sydney than BBIC.
