Learning Tips for Japanese Episode1: Particle「を」

Who is struggled with particles in Japanese?

In fact, that is not as complicated as you think.

We have a variety of particles but you can divide in

For example,

「を」 describes objects with action verbs such as たべます(to eat)、のみます(to drink).

①「すしを たべます」 as an example.

But at the beginner level,  「を」 indicates other roles of a word like:

②「はしを わたります」 (To across the bridge)

③「バスを おります」 (To get off a bus)

They look like 「を」 states objects of the verbs but actually not.

In ② sentence, with moving action verbs, 「を」 means the passing point.

There must be the final destination and on the way there, you across the bridge.

In ③ sentence, when you are leaving an object, we use 「を」 to state the place where the action started to be taken.

「でます」 (to leave, to come out) is another example to use starting point 「を」.

Even if you put a place name as the starting point, do not use 「に」 or 「で」 which are famous for a particle describing places.

「に」 is used when you are approaching to the destination, and 「で」 is used with action verbs to describe where the action is taken.

Also, it does not have to be physical leaving. When you quit/graduate from something/somewhere, you can use 「を」 to state what you quit/graduate from.

④「がっこうを そつぎょうします」 is an example of this 「を」.

Now, how can you remember those rules?

Object 「を」 is really easy as you are/will be familiar with at the beginning of beginner course.

Passing point 「を」…

Leaving point 「を」…

Imagine the action you are passing and leaving something/somewhere.

Doesn’t your image look like this?

Yes!!!

It looks like 「を」!!!!
